Description of oocyst: Oocyst shape: subspheroid to ellipsoid; number of walls: 2; wall thickness: outer 3.9-5.6; inner 0.8; wall characteristics: outer, rough, dark brown, thick, comprising bulk of the wall; inner, smooth, thin, colorless; L x W: 51.3 x 41.3 (44-57 x 38-47); L/W ratio: 1.2; M: absent; OR: present; OR characteristics: spheroidal mass composed of a cluster of large granules and globules; OR L x W: ~13 x 13; PG: absent. Distinctive features of oocyst: its large size and dark, outer wall, which mask the fine details of the sporocysts.

Description of sporocysts and sporozoites: Sporocyst shape: lemon-shaped; L x W: 17.3 x 11.5 (17-20 x 10.5-14); L/W ratio: 1.5; SB: present; SSB: absent; PSB: absent; SR: present; SR characteristics: composed of many coarse granules; SP: elongate, lying lengthwise in sporocyst, without RB. Distinctive features of sporocyst: smooth, thin wall ~0.7 and SP without RB.

Prevalence: Oocysts were recovered from 1/3 (33%) G. senegalensis that died at the Amsterdam Zoo on the day after its arrival.

Sporulation: Exogenous. Oocysts sporulated within 20 days in 4% aqueous potassium dichromate solution at 20-24ºC.

Prepatent and patent periods: Unknown.

Site of infection: Poelma (1966) specifically stated that endogenous stages of E. lemuris were closely recognizable...in paraffin sections of the jejunum and colon. It is not clear how he determined this.
