Description of oocyst: Oocyst shape: subspheroid;
number of walls: 1; wall
thickness: 1.3; wall characteristics: smooth to lightly pitted, appears striated in
optical cross section; L x W: 26.1 x 24.7 (23-31 x 22-28); L/W ratio: 1.1; M:
absent; OR: present; OR characteristics: 1 or more granules (that may represent PG);
PG: absent (in original description). Distinctive features of oocyst: the 1-layered
striated wall.
Description of sporocysts and sporozoites:
Sporocyst shape: lemon-shaped; L x W:
13.0 x 9.4 (10-15 x 8-12); L/W ratio: 1.4; SB: present; SSB: absent; PSB: absent;
SR: present; SR characteristics: finely granular; SP: arranged randomly within
sporocyst, without RB. Distinctive features of sporocyst: wall smooth, thin, ~0.6.
Prevalence: Oocysts were recovered from 1/3 (33%) G. senegalensis that died at the
Amsterdam Zoo on the day after its arrival.
Sporulation: Exogenous. Oocysts sporulated within 2
wk in 4% aqueous potassium
dichromate solution at 20-24ºC.
Prepatent and patent periods: Unknown.
Site of infection: Unknown. Oocysts recovered from
intestinal contents and feces.
Material deposited: None.
Remarks: This was the same host imported into the
Amsterdam Zoo from Africa; see
remarks for E. galago (above). Like both E. galago and E.
lemuris, this species has
not been reported since its original description.
