Description of oocyst: Oocyst shape: spheroid to
subspheroid; number of walls:
3;
wall thickness: 1.5; wall characteristics: striated, composed of coarse outer layer
that often separates during processing, a thin middle layer that also may be absent,
and a thick, smooth, inner layer underlaid by a thin membrane that appears smooth
when only the inner layer is present; L x W: 20 x 19 (15-28 x 14-25); L/W ratio:
1.05 (1.0-1.3); M: absent; OR: present; OR characteristics: a homogenous globule,
present only in fresh oocysts; OR L x W: 4-10; PG: present; number of PG: 1 (in line
drawing); Distinctive features of oocyst: striated outer wall is similar to that of
E. ptilocerci.
Description of sporocysts and sporozoites:
Sporocyst shape: ellipsoid; L x W: 11
x 7
(8-12 x 6-9); L/W ratio: 1.6 (1.1-1.8); SB: present; SSB: absent; PSB: absent; SR:
present; SR characteristics: composed of many coarse granules that lie in a band
between SP; SP: elongate, each with large posterior RB. Distinctive features of
sporocyst: shorter, with smaller L/W ratio (1.4 vs. 1.9) than those of E.
ptilocerci.
Prevalence: Oocysts were collected from at least 6
T. glis and 1 T.
minor
(Mullin
et al., 1972). Mullin and Colley (1972) found 5/19 (26%) T. tana, 1/8 (12.5%)
T.
minor, and 1/1 T. glis to be infected with E. tupaia.
Sporulation: Exogenous. Oocysts sporulated within 1
wk in 2.5% aqueous potassium
dichromate solution at 30ºC.
Prepatent and patent periods: Unknown.
Site of infection: Unknown. Oocysts recovered from
feces.
Material deposited: None.
Remarks: According to Mullin et al. (1972),
measurements of sporulated oocysts
from
1 T. minor differed slightly: Oocyst L x W: 24 x 22 (19-29 x 17-25); L/W
ratio: 1.1
(1.0-1.4). Sporocyst: L x W: 11 x 8 (9-12 x 7-10); L/W ratio: 1.4 (1.1-1.5).
